Apple’s Budget MacBook Neo Ships 1.1M Units In Just Three Weeks

On June 3, 2026, IDC released official market research data showing Apple’s affordable entry-level laptop MacBook Neo has become an instant blockbuster thanks to its aggressive pricing strategy. With merely three weeks on the market, the model hit global shipments of 1.1 million units in the March-ending fiscal quarter, outperforming the M5-powered MacBook Air (over 900,000 units) and MacBook Pro (around 550,000 units) launched in the same period, shattering the stereotype that Apple only targets high-end laptop consumers.

Unveiled in early March, MacBook Neo is priced starting at CNY 4,599 in China, roughly 45% cheaper than the base MacBook Air. In India, its starting price stands at 69,900 Indian rupees (around CNY 4,981), far below the 119,900 rupees tag of local base MacBook Air, greatly lowering the entry cost for consumers to join the Mac ecosystem. For hardware configuration, the notebook retains premium Apple craftsmanship including an all-aluminum chassis and a 13-inch Liquid Retina display. To cut costs, Apple swapped the in-house M-series silicon for A18 Pro chip and equipped 8GB RAM on the base variant, striking a fine balance between build quality and affordable pricing.

Region-wise, the US market accounts for 44% of its global shipments. Even in India where the product has only been available for a short time, nearly 18,000 units have been sold, leaving local dealers struggling with persistent stock shortages. Industry analysts attribute the surging demand to continuous price hikes across Windows laptops worldwide, making the cost-friendly MacBook Neo a perfect fit for mid-range thin-and-light notebook market vacancy.

Data from Counterpoint Research reveals Apple previously held only a 2% market share in the $400-$699 notebook segment, a figure projected to jump to 15% driven by the booming sales of MacBook Neo. Tim Cook noted during earnings call that customer reception exceeded internal estimates, with persistent supply shortages and record-high new Mac adopters in the March quarter, attracting numerous first-time laptop buyers into Apple’s product ecosystem.

The hot-selling product has pushed competitors to roll out countermeasures. Dell quickly released the refreshed XPS 13 priced at $699 to compete directly in the same price bracket. IDC analysts forecast a drastic shipment surge for MacBook Neo in the coming quarter as Apple ramps up production and eases supply chain constraints, reshaping the competitive landscape of global entry-level PC industry.
