Huawei Mate XT2 Switches from S-fold to G-shaped Triple Fold Design

On June 3, 2026, digital blogger Dingjiao Digital revealed that Huawei’s new premium triple-fold flagship Mate XT2 Ultimate Master will abandon the classic S-shaped “scroll-style” folding structure adopted by previous generations and adopt an innovative G-shaped double inward fold design, bringing comprehensive upgrades in mechanical structure, daily experience and hardware & software configuration.

Huawei Mate XT2 Switches from S-fold to G-shaped Triple Fold Design

All legacy Huawei Mate XT triple-fold devices featured iconic S-type folding with one outward-folded screen plus two inward-folded panels, closing into the shape of ancient Chinese scrolls. This design delivers ultra-slim body and lightweight feel for comfortable single-hand grip, which has long served as Huawei’s signature triple-fold design feature. In contrast, the upcoming Mate XT2 follows the design logic of Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold with a full G-type inward fold: two side screens fold inward to wrap the main display entirely. All fragile flexible inner screens are hidden inside the frame, effectively avoiding scratches and impact damage and fixing the long-standing pain point of vulnerable foldable panels in the industry.

The G-form structure naturally comes with an independent small outer screen on the chassis. Users can make calls, reply to messages and scroll short videos without unfolding the full large display, cutting unnecessary hinge wear from repeated unfolding. Huawei will redesign and fine-tune a new-generation hinge for the updated layout to optimize body thickness and weight while boosting structural stability, striking a balance between durability and portability.

On the software side, the upcoming HarmonyOS 7 is specially customized for independent dual-screen interaction under the G-fold architecture, with optimized logic for split-screen display, cross-screen linkage and multitasking. For core performance, Mate XT2 is equipped with Kirin 9050 Pro flagship chip, featuring prominent improvements in computing power and energy efficiency over its predecessor. Deep coordination between the new chip and HarmonyOS 7 greatly enhances overall performance in multi-window operation and cross-screen task management on the big folded screen.

The dramatic shift from thinness-oriented S-fold to protection-focused G-fold marks a new design era for Huawei’s triple-fold lineup, upgrading product competitiveness with balanced durability and practicality in high-end foldable smartphone market.
